What is the right hair length for women over 40?

This is a question I'm often asked.  I chuckle when I recall being told in my image training in the 80s that "no woman over 40 should have long hair"!  Mind you, we were also instructed not to wear pants when consulting back then!

Hair length is not a "one-size-fits-all" issue.  It depends on a number of factors.

Firstly...whether it suits your face shape or not.  Those with oblong or rectangular faces need to avoid hair that's long and straight without a fringe...otherwise they can look horsey!

Secondly...how aged your face is.  Some women look old at 30 and others young at 60.  Long hair can really age or date you if you're in the first bracket.  A pet hate of mine is to see a mass of bottom-skimming hair from the rear only to be surprised by the tired old face that greets me at the front!  Why does that cliche "mutton dressed up as lamb" come to mind?

Thirdly...just how long?  If you always wear it up, its irrelevant of course.  If not, as a general rule of thumb, shoulder length is a good place to stop.  Shorter layers around the face often create balance.

At the other end of the scale, short hair can actually age some women.  Ultimately it depends on YOUR unique set of characteristics.

Your Professional Image - Asset or Liability? Pt 2

Have you ever met someone with whom you didn’t feel comfortable yet couldn’t put your finger on what it was? Often it will be something in their appearance that just doesn’t seem to gel with the anticipated image you had. This can be quite disconcerting, especially if this person is someone you need to trust - such as your bank manager!

To ensure you look successfulconfident and credible, there are four main criteria to remember when selecting clothing and accessories. They should:

  • Complement you physically
  • Reflect your personality
  • Be appropriate
  • Be current
Here are some tips to start this year on the right foot:

  • Look at yourself through the eyes of your clients and colleagues
  • Dress every day as if it were the most important day of the week
  • Think about what’s on your agenda each day and dress accordingly
  •  If you wear a uniform, treat it as though it were a Paris original
  • Reflect an image of where you would like to be, not where you are now
  • For your most important occasions, don’t forget your jacket!
And remember, when contemplating your professional image for this year:

“If you continue to do what you’ve always done, then you’ll continue to be what you’ve always been”.

Will your appearance be an asset or a liability in 2011?

Your Professional Image - Asset or Liability? Pt 1

Your appearance may be more of an asset or a liability to your professional success than you may think. Did you know that studies have shown that people who look good are more likely to be successful in life? Not necessarily are they more attractive, but they are well groomed and styled for their position in life.

When contemplating your professional image for next year, remember:

“If you continue to do what you’ve always done, then you’ll continue to be what you’ve always been”.

For some, this means appearance will continue to be an asset to one’s career. For others, it may just be a liability.

Earrings – Focussing The Spotlight on Your Face

Earrings can look sophisticated or silly, depending on whether they’re appropriate for both the outfit and the occasion.  Here are some tips on what to select:

«   Understated earrings, especially those worn close to the ear e.g. ball or shield, or drop earrings e.g. pearls - classic suits and business wear

«   Funky/arty earrings – dramatic or trendy clothes

«   Glitzy/”bling bling” earrings – evening or formal day wear

            «   Casual/earthy earrings – casual clothes

Earrings can also make us look like we’ve had a facelift, or that we need one.....

«   Long faces – avoid long narrow earrings, horizontal (wide) designs are better

«   Wide jawlines e.g. pear, triangle, square – avoid horizontal designs

«   Short necks – avoid very long earrings
