Your Professional Image - Asset or Liability? Pt 2
Have you ever met someone with whom you didn’t feel comfortable yet couldn’t put your finger on what it was? Often it will be something in their appearance that just doesn’t seem to gel with the anticipated image you had. This can be quite disconcerting, especially if this person is someone you need to trust - such as your bank manager!
To ensure you look successful, confident and credible, there are four main criteria to remember when selecting clothing and accessories. They should:
- Complement you physically
- Reflect your personality
- Be appropriate
- Be current
Here are some tips to start this year on the right foot:
- Look at yourself through the eyes of your clients and colleagues
- Dress every day as if it were the most important day of the week
- Think about what’s on your agenda each day and dress accordingly
- If you wear a uniform, treat it as though it were a Paris original
- Reflect an image of where you would like to be, not where you are now
- For your most important occasions, don’t forget your jacket!
And remember, when contemplating your professional image for this year:
“If you continue to do what you’ve always done, then you’ll continue to be what you’ve always been”.
Will your appearance be an asset or a liability in 2011?

Your Professional Image - Asset or Liability? Pt 1
Your appearance may be more of an asset or a liability to your professional success than you may think. Did you know that studies have shown that people who look good are more likely to be successful in life? Not necessarily are they more attractive, but they are well groomed and styled for their position in life.

When contemplating your professional image for next year, remember:
“If you continue to do what you’ve always done, then you’ll continue to be what you’ve always been”.
For some, this means appearance will continue to be an asset to one’s career. For others, it may just be a liability.

Projecting A Successful Corporate Image
Just as manufacturers brand their products and spend thousands of dollars to develop an identity that is instantly recognisable and appealing to its customers, so too must every organisation.
Corporate image may be relaxed and democratic, highly traditional, hierarchical, avant-garde or high-tech.
A consistent corporate image should be reflected in every aspect of the organisation’s physical property:
- logo and letterhead
- corporate colours
- furnishings and designs
- buildings
Both internal and external features of buildings make a statement about an organisation’s:
- corporate philosophy
- management style
- attitude towards staff and clients
- position in the marketplace
The external image of an organisation not only impacts on clients and staff but of every person who drives past one of its buildings.
The most effective and timely way for an organisation to improve it’s image in the marketplace is by updating the exterior of its buildings.

Colour for Business
We project very powerful messages, without even opening our mouths. The important thing to remember is to send out the right message at the right time.
- Dark colours - authoritative, formal, powerful
- Medium colours - approachable, friendly
- Pastel colours - use only for contrast
